For the first time in 26 years, a new library is opening in Rutherford County. But there’s something you won’t see there: books. Or, bookshelves. The Technology Engagement Center is designed as a trendsetting library that focuses on digital literacy, computing skills and “maker” spaces.

Rutherford County is opening a special court, starting this week, to streamline how the county deals with environmental issues.

Six departments will refer their citations to the court, including Fire and Rescue, Building Codes, Animal Control, Solid Waste, Engineering and Emergency Management.

Monday was one of the busiest days of the year for the online retailer Amazon. The company says on Cyber Monday, hundreds of people place orders every second. And in Tennessee, this massive production depends on thousands of seasonal workers the company has hired across the state.

Unlike in Davidson County, schools in Rutherford will be in session on Monday, Aug. 21. So MTSU is helping teachers in Murfreesboro and surrounding areas prepare their students for the total solar eclipse.

The university's astronomy department has created lesson plans for K-12 teachers. One lesson has students model the distances between the earth, moon and sun using tennis balls and string. Another shows students how to predict the timing of future eclipses.

The biggest hang-up with standardized testing in Tennessee this year seems to be the turnaround time for grading. Many of the scores won't be ready in time to be included in final report cards. Scoring of TNReady has been slowed down because most districts opted to stick with paper-based tests after last year's failed attempt to go paperless.

Rutherford County is going to have to stop its policy of arresting and detaining children accused of minor crimes, at least for the time being. A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction in favor of a lawsuit that claims the county has spent years unlawfully detaining juveniles.

There’s only one place in Middle Tennessee that has built a new sewer system — from scratch — in recent years. Eagleville, the one-stoplight town of 650 people in Rutherford County, has cleaned up a foul smell that used to hang in the air. And the town is now seeing its first major development interest in a decade.

Rutherford County officials say Middle Point Landfill, the dumping ground for 19 counties, won’t have space for much longer.

This week marks the beginning of an earnest discussion about what to do when the landfill is full.

Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold will be jailed and held in a federal prison until a corruption trial scheduled for February.

Arnold had been free on bond since a 14-count indictment on bribery and corruption charges. U.S. District Court Magistrate Alistair Newbern revoked Arnold’s bond Wednesday following a five-hour hearing the day before.
