Community Oversight Board Has An Open Seat To Fill — And 3 More Coming

Nashville’s new Community Oversight Board has an open seat to fill — and several more vacancies coming early next year.

Bob Cooper will step down next month to take on a new role as Metro’s law director. He was slated to serve a three-year term on the police oversight board.

Three other members will also vacate their seats when their initial terms end in January. William Weeden, the board’s executive director, says he’s not worried about the turnover slowing the COB down.

“I would hope that if anyone is interested in joining the board, they’re already up to speed on what we’ve been doing,” he says. “All of our information’s online. All of our meetings have been online. And the level of commitment, obviously, that’s needed for this particular board is very high.”

Cooper is one of two mayoral appointees on the board, which means Mayor John Cooper will choose his replacement.

The other seats will be filled in January — one that’s also selected by the mayor and two based on nominations from the community.
