Two state lawmakers are reminding parents that they have the right to review what their children are being taught about Islam.
State Sens. Kerry Roberts, R-Springfield, and Mae Beavers, R-Mt. Juliet, issued the statement Thursday afternoon.
It comes after districts across Tennessee rejected a public records request from the American Center for Law & Justice to release all teaching materials related to the religion. The ACLJ claims Tennessee seventh graders are being indoctrinated in Islam as part of the state’s new social studies curriculum.
Roberts says the dispute has created confusion.
“You have a lot of people who are under the misconception that they can’t have access to this material,” said Roberts. “The ACLJ thing, that has nothing to do with parents.”
Roberts and Beavers point out that
a state law passed last year guarantees parents’ and legal guardians’ access to all teaching materials.
Robertson County is
turning over copies of its materials to the local library for the public to see.
