Nashville General Hospital and Meharry Medical College are pooling all of their patient data over the last 10 years and making it available to researchers. The data set is meant to provide insight into local health challenges and broader racial disparities.

Nashville's Meharry Medical College is working out the details of its first international partnership, and the historically black institution plans to focus on health challenges the U.S. shares with the southern African nation of Zambia.

Meharry Medical College took public comments about the future of Nashville General Hospital on Tuesday night, and the message was clear. Community members — most with some kind of personal ties — said they want the city to spend more money on the hospital, not less.

Meharry Medical College has decided to take a leading role in the future of Nashville General Hospital, organizing a working group that includes the administration of Mayor Megan Barry, school officials, ministers and labor leaders representing hospital staff.

This follows a few weeks of uncertainty after school announced this month it will relocate its third- and fourth-year medical students to an HCA hospital because business at Nashville General is so slow.

Mayor Megan Barry revealed a plan on Thursday to entirely restructure Metro General Hospital. She called an announcement that Meharry Medical College was moving its students to another facility an "opportunity to revisit" the business model of General Hospital.

Even as snow hit Nashville late Friday night, people were already lining up outside Meharry Medical College for a student-organized event set to start Saturday morning. Meharry's chapter of American Student Dentist Association (ASDA) provided free oral surgeries, cleanings, and fillings for those without dental insurance.
