It took years of courting, a pitch from the Kings of Leon and the promise of economic incentives to lure nonstop flights from London back to Nashville.

Monday was the busiest day ever for people departing Nashville International Airport. 25,000 people boarded a plane. It was a 10 percent jump from the previous single-day record. And the previous record was set on the same Monday after Bonnaroo and CMA Fest last year.

The Nashville airport broke ground today on the first project in a major expansion: building a 2,000-space parking garage and a new roadway, which will cost $122 million in total. The parking garage itself will cost $85 million.

Over the next several years, it also plans to build an onsite hotel and international arrivals building, relocate roads to accommodate traffic, and expand ticketing and baggage claims.

The vision includes an on-site hotel, an entirely new entrance called the "Grand Ole Lobby," and an international arrivals building meant to set the stage for non-stop flights to Europe, Asia and Latin America.
