Saint Thomas officials started construction this week on a 76-bed psychiatric hospital, which is their first in Nashville.

It's a rare partnership with a for-profit operator to run the facility — Acadia Healthcare — but they say patients will barely notice the difference.

Saint Thomas Health is going to start treating more patients in their own homes this fall. The Middle Tennessee hospital system is launching a joint venture with a Nashville-based startup that may be a model for other markets.

The Nashville hospital formerly known as Baptist is marking a century in operation, though it's changed hands a few times. There's a 100-year celebration on Wednesday, with former executives invited back to speak.

The neonatal intensive care unit at Saint Thomas Midtown is the first in Middle Tennessee to go live with baby webcams, a technological upgrade that hospitals around the country have been installing.

But the video streams are seen as more than a modern convenience.

For the most fragile babies, there's one thing that's almost guaranteed to boost their chances of survival: breast milk.

So a nonprofit in Nashville is trying to make it easier for infants to obtain it when their mothers can't produce enough. Their goal is to open a breast milk bank, similar to a blood bank, that would store and distribute donations from other moms.
